Understanding Codependency

What is Co-dependency?
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, low self-worth, self-doubt, or struggled with painful relationship dynamics and interpersonal problems? You may be experiencing co-dependency, a commonly overlooked diagnosis. Co-dependency is a learned way of ‘being and feeling’ that originates from negative childhood experiences such as emotional or physical neglect, dysfunctional family dynamics, abandonment trauma, and lost childhoods. It manifests as a lack of selfhood and a constant need to abandon oneself.

Are You Prone to Co-dependency?

If you have grown up with alcoholic parents, narcissistic parents, parents with mental health issues, or have never felt good enough, you may be prone to developing co-dependency. Individuals from dysfunctional families characterized by denial and secrecy, as well as those who have experienced abuse, adoption, or foster care, and those born to emotionally immature or traumatised parents, are also at risk. Additionally, if you have been in oppressive relationships with individuals displaying narcissistic traits, co-dependency may be present.

How Does Co-dependency Develop?

Co-dependency can begin from birth when a child is born to parents who are unaware, unconscious, wounded, and unable to attune to their child genuinely and authentically. Healthy bonds and attunement allow children to feel safe, cared for, protected, loved, and worthy. However, when parents are preoccupied with their own issues or neglect the needs of their children, a child may grow up feeling unsafe, leading to hypervigilance, anxiety, and constant fear. When parents are unable to meet their child’s needs, a healthy sense of self and safety cannot develop.

What Does Co-dependency Feel Like?

Co-dependency can impact your mood, often being influenced by the moods of others. Some common symptoms of co-dependency include seeking external validation, distrusting your own choices and thoughts, people-pleasing tendencies, fear of angering others, resentment when validation is not received, difficulty saying no, envy, difficulty experiencing fun, feeling overwhelmed by others’ needs, believing it’s your responsibility to keep everyone happy, lacking boundaries, attracting narcissistic individuals into relationships, feeling like an extension of others, and finding fulfillment in fixing or rescuing others.

How Does Co-dependency Affect Your Life?

Co-dependency can result in chronic self-blame, low self-esteem, and a constant sense of inadequacy. It can severely hinder healthy growth, development, and the ability to sustain loving relationships. The fear of being abandoned, stemming from childhood emotional or physical abandonment, can sabotage your chances of sustaining a happy, loving relationship with a partner. Constantly being on guard and controlling your environment to feel safe can lead to anxiety and even panic attacks. Co-dependent individuals often lose themselves by moulding into who others want and need them to be, with their identity revolving around servicing others’ needs.

You Are Not Alone Struggling with co-dependency is not a reflection of weakness in your character. Co-dependency can develop in anyone who has come from an unsafe home environment, where bonds were insufficient, rules were unfair, abuse was denied, and emotions went ignored. All children require validation, appreciation, praise, and connection with their parents, especially during times of hurt, fear, confusion, or anxiety. Shaming a child for needing love from their parents is abusive. Feeling unworthy due to emotional neglect is not based on truth but on the opinions of others who were unhappy with themselves. Remember, you were born enough and deserving of love, protection, safety, and consistent bonding experiences that could have allowed you to develop a healthy sense of self. None of this is your fault.
